The Bangalore West Lions Superspeciality Eye Hospital was founded on 30th June 1984 as a project of the Lions Club of Bangalore West Trust. It is a non-religious, non-political and non-sectarial hospital. Started with a vision to conquer blindness, the Hospital aims to provide state of the art ophthalmic services at affordable rates to society. It also provides the same world-class services totally free of cost to poor and needy patients. The Hospital is also a teaching institution with over 180 staff members. The Lions Eye Bank is a member of the International Federation of Eye Banks, U.S.A & a member of the Eye Bank Association of India. It is one of five international eye banks in India and features 24hr eye collection services.
The main hospital facility is a Super Speciality Eye setup with over 16,000 Sq. ft. carpet area, located in the central part of Bangalore City. The subsidised and non-paying section is offered in the adjacent building with carpet area of 11,000 square feet.
The Hospital has three satellite hospitals in Hunsur, Kollegal and Holenarasipura. It also has four peripheral Vision Centers in Dommasandra, Doddaballapur, Devanahalli and Yeshwantpur.
The BW Lions Sri Vidyasagar Oswal Institute of Ophthalmology is a hospital, training and research facility under construction at JP Nagar Bangalore.
Education and Research
The National Board of Examinations, New Delhi has approved the hospital for DNB training. The hospital imparts quality training to Post-Graduates for Fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases, Phaco Refractive surgeries and Glaucoma recognised by RGUHS. Fellowship programmes in General Ophthalmology & Cornea are also provided by the Hospital. It provides short-term phaco-training programme.
